Batik Painting of Sir Kyffin Williams

Jun 16, 2023

I recently completed a batik painting of Sir Kyffin Williams,

I have long been an admirer of the work of Sir Kyffin Williams.

While living in Manchester I would travel to north Wales to walk and run in the Eryri (Snowdonia) mountains on the weekends. I became very familiar with the weather, and the atmosphere this created.

The sense of the power of nature that you feel walking in these hills, feeling insignificant in your smallness and at the same time, part of a history of people who have trodden these paths.

Kyffin Williams depicts this atmosphere perfectly in his oil paintings. Here is one of my favourite examples,

Blaen Ffrancon No 1 1978
Kyffin Williams (1918–2006)
I also greatly admire his beautiful, bold portraits and have seen them many times at the Oriel Mon in Llangefni.
German Girl by Kyffin Williams (1918–2006), c.1963
From Royal Academy of Arts
William Lee by Kyffin Williams (1918–2006), 1979
From Amgueddfa Cymru – National Museum Wales
There is more information in the websites below if you are interested in learning more about him.
